Employment
- At June
2001, there were 220,765 retail employees in Scotland, just over 8%
of the total workforce.
- Over the
12 months to June 2001 retail employment increased by 0.3%. In comparison,
total employment in Scotland fell by 0.4%. (NOMIS)
Retail
Outlets
- The number
of retail outlets in Scotland has decreased throughout the 1990's. In
1996 there were 25,000 outlets and this figure is estimated to have
fallen to 22,500 by 2000. (Scottish Executive)
Retail
Sales
- In 2000,
Scottish retail sales were approximately £19 billion. (Scottish
Executive)
- Retail
sales accounted for 29% of Gross Domestic Product by expenditure in
Scotland in 1997. (Scottish Economic Statistics, 2000)
- Retail
accounts for 48.7% of total weekly household expenditure in Scotland.
- Food and
non-alcoholic drinks make up the biggest proportion of average weekly
household spending in retail outlets, at 40% of the total.
- By 2010,
it is estimated that e-retailing will account for 8% of retail sales
in Scotland. (Scottish Executive)
Population
- In 2001,
Scotland had a population of 5.1 million people, representing over two
million households. (ONS Regional Trends)
- 65% of
the population are of working age. From this group 77% are economically
active. (ONS Regional Trends)
