 Top retailers have come together to ensure the best possible measures are in place to protect shop staff from violence, after the latest British Retail Consortium (BRC) annual crime survey found more than 35,000 staff had suffered physical or verbal abuse or threats during a 12 month period.

 Reacting to today's (Wednesday's) Queen's Speech, British Retail Consortium (BRC) Director General, Stephen Robertson, said: "In 2011 retailers were involved in negotiating a string of responsibility deals, were affected by changes to employment legislation and had to prepare for the implications of increased localism.
