FOOD SAFETY
Food safety is of paramount importance to grocery retailers and retailers are hugely supportive of the work of the Food Standards Agency in this regard. Any issue concerning the safety of any food is treated extremely seriously and every precaution is taken to ensure food sold is safe to eat and that consumers have the information necessary to prepare food safely at home.
The biggest challenge currently in food safety policy is Campylobacter in raw poultry meat. The scientific community themselves acknowledge that the biology of the organism is not yet fully understood which means identifying an effective solution to reduce prevalence of this organism requires extensive research and trial work. The BRC is working very hard on this issue. We are actively involved in various technical working groups with poultry suppliers, the FSA and Defra. Recent research from the academic community and industry's own trial work is reviewed, with the aim of identifying an effective solution across the supply chain that will make real changes to Campylobacter levels. The BRC and our members are working in closely in partnership to tackle this issue, and we urge the Government to continue to support the industry in this work, as we pool expertise to reach a solution.
