Policies & Issues: Taxation

Tax Framework for Business
The Government published a new Tax Framework for Business which provides a short statement of the six key principles underpinning tax policy development in the UK and the processes that Government should apply when developing tax policy:

- Competitiveness
- Fairness
- Minimising distortions
- Simplicity
- Stability and certainty
- Tax administration/compliance costs

The Framework has been developed in collaboration with the business/government forum on tax and globalisation which the Government set up in April 2008.

The BRC's view is that the Tax Framework has the potential to go some way to providing retailers, particularly large multi-nationals, with greater long-term certainty in respect of future business tax policy developments in the UK. However, the crucial factor will be the practical application of these principles by government and its officials. It is critical that Government is fully transparent about its agenda/thinking on any new tax policy developments.
