THE CARBON REDUCTION COMMITMENT ENERGY EFFICIENCY SCHEME (CRC)
The CRC began on 1 April 2010. It is the UK's first cap and trade scheme to achieve greater energy efficiency across the public and private sector.
Retailers that use more than 6,000 MWh of electricity through a half hourly meter in 2008 will qualify to participate in the scheme. This equates to approximately an annual electricity bill of £500,000. If a retailer used between 3,000 to 6,000 MWh of electricity through a half hourly meter in 2008 it will be obligated to report, but not participate in the scheme. Registration to participate in the scheme closes in September 2010.
A number of changes have occurred throughout the development of the scheme that ensures it is more fit for purpose in the current economic climate. However, the scheme has failed to provide an adequate solution of managing the scheme between landlords and occupiers. The BRC continues to work closely with other sector organisations and government to address this issue.
