The BRC believes in free and above all, fair trade. Companies that engage in illegal dumping of products on the EU market fully deserve the sometimes very strong and swift action the Commission takes in imposing duties on imports.
Unfortunately, the procedures used in the age old EU Antidumping Regulation are part of another era. The EU is no longer a producer dominated economy. The service industry and the needs of the consumer occupy at least an equal, if not superior weighting in the balance of interests.
However, a casual reading of the Regulation demonstrates a continued unwillingness to adapt to a new world economy. Where supply chains are globally integrated and companies are no longer simply European, but international. Now, when the EU imposes antidumping duties on imports, it not only harms the consumer, the retailer, and the importer, but it also harms some of its leading enterprises who assemble abroad, but design over here.
The BRC will continue to make the case for this system to change and will continue to urge Europe's politicians to show leadership and courage in reaching out to the consumer's best interests.
