REACH Guide for Retailers
Chemicals are vital to the retail sector and are present in virtually every product and its packaging. However, to ensure safe use of chemicals throughout the supply chain and their lifecycle, any organisation within the EU that is manufacturing, importing, supplying or using chemicals, or placing articles on the market must be in compliance with two main pieces of legislation: the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH; 1907/2006) and the Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP; 1272/2008). While REACH requires those manufacturing or importing chemicals to be responsible for understanding and managing the risks associated with use, the CLP is concerned with the intrinsic hazards of chemicals and how to inform others about them.

This guidance document was prepared by REACHReady to help retailers understand both the impact of the REACH and CLP Regulations on their industry sector and their legal obligations to ensure compliance. It is an updated version of the previous guide released in October 2008, incorporating changes such as legislative amendments relating to Authorisation and Restriction of substances, interpretative changes affecting the supply of articles, the passing of the first REACH registration deadline, and the introduction of the CLP.

This document is available for download to BRC retail members only.
