A string of British Retail Consortium (BRC) member retailers are announcing their continued support for the Drinkaware Trust today (Monday). The Secretary of State for Health Andy Burnham has welcomed the retail industry's commitment to the Trust.
Members of the British Retail Consortium (BRC) have pledged a third of the £5 million the entire drinks industry is providing to secure the future of Drinkaware. This is in addition to the millions of pounds worth of free advertising retailers provide in-store and on packaging for campaigns run by Drinkaware. This is the independent body, paid for by the alcohol industry, which helps customers think about their alcohol consumption and encourages them to drink responsibly.
Retailers are at the forefront of promoting responsible attitudes to alcohol. They have led the way by adopting the Department of Health's alcohol unit labelling on their own-brand products and tackling under-aged drinking through their Challenge 25 initiative.
Stephen Robertson, British Retail Consortium Director General, said: "This is a significant contribution from retailers and further evidence of their commitment to changing cultural attitudes to alcohol in the UK. This is in addition to other work shops are doing, such as providing unit labelling information and tackling under-aged drinking. Retailers recognise that providing information and education is the way to tackle irresponsible consumption."
