BRC TO REVEAL STATE OF RETAIL JOBS NEXT WEEK
July 22, 2010
Launch of quarterly Retail Employment Monitor

For the first time, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) will show how retail job numbers have changed compared with the depths of the recession a year ago and indicate retail job prospects for the immediate future.

Following almost two years work, the BRC will launch its new, quarterly Retail Employment Monitor (REM) at the end of next week. The REM is sponsored by leading business law firm Bond Pearce LLP.

Gathering data from retailers employing over a million people and responsible for over half the UK's retail turnover, the BRC - Bond Pearce REM will assess the impact of job creation and job losses over the previous year. It will also provide a unique measure of retailers' employment intentions for the quarter ahead.

This will be the first time retail employment data this current has been available. The first REM will be published under embargo for Friday 30 July. It compares each of the months in the second quarter of 2010 with the same months a year ago.

With speculation about the extent to which private sector jobs can replace the thousands of public sector jobs expected to be lost over the next few years, the BRC believes an up-to-date measure of retail employment is vital to inform policy making. It will fill a key gap in the economic indicators available for assessing the progress of recovery.

Notes to Editors:

The BRC – Bond Pearce Retail Employment Monitor measures changes and trends in retail sector employment over time. It also measures store numbers. Data is analysed in monthly intervals and is collected on a quarterly basis.

The Monitor is representative of large and small retailers, covering both food and non-food sectors. The sample includes data from retailers employing over one million employees - that is more than a third of the total retail labour market - and accounting for over 50 per cent of the retail sector by turnover.

The first BRC – Bond Pearce Retail Employment Monitor will be released to the media on Thursday 29 July 2010 embargoed for 00.01 Friday 30 July. The next will be published in late October.

The REM joins the BRC's suite of retail releases, which include the monthly Retail Sales Monitor and Shop Price Index, to provide a comprehensive, ongoing assessment of the state of UK retailing.
