SCOTLAND - SRC WELCOMES GUIDANCE ON PROTECTING STAFF AGAINST VIOLENCE AT WORK
|
| February 2, 2006 |
|
The Scottish Retail Consortium (SRC) is today welcoming guidance issued by the Scottish Executive which highlights that violence in the workplace is unacceptable.
Retail in Scotland employs 261,000 people, many of whom are in customer facing roles and often end up on the receiving end of customers' violent or abusive outbursts.
SRC Director, Fiona Moriarty, says: "The SRC welcomes the guidance by the Scottish Executive. With incidents of violence occurring daily in our stores, we applaud any steps that will help reduce retail staff from being seen as easy targets by abusive customers.
"While our members make significant efforts to protect their staff against violence in the work place, it still happens. Apart from the obvious side effects, there can often be additional consequences such as stress or a fear of returning to work, which can create an environment of poor morale amongst employees."
The guidance published by the Scottish Executive also outlines what businesses should be doing to protect their employees, such as undertaking risk assessments and how to cope with an incident once it has happened.
