In 2009 UK retail sales were over £287 billion.
The retail industry employed over 2.8 million people as at the end of September 2009. This equates to 11% of the total UK workforce.
Over the last five years, employment in retailing has fallen by over 72,000.
The BRC-Nielsen Shop Price Index shows the price of shop goods were up 2.2% from a year ago. This is higher than the ONS CPI All-Goods Index which reported prices were up 1.6% compared with a year ago.
9% of all VAT-registered businesses in the UK are retailers, with the total number currently at 192,600.
In 2008 there were 293,510 retail outlets in the UK
More than a third of consumer spending goes through shops.
The retail sector generates 8% of the Gross Domestic Product of the UK.
Sales over the internet account for less than 4% of total retail sales, despite strong growth in recent years.
