ON-PACK RECYCLING LABEL SCHEME

 Research shows that consumers are increasingly frustrated that they don't know what packaging can and cannot be recycled and are looking for much clearer on-pack guidance to improve their understanding. Despite improving household recycling rates in recent years we know the UK is still lagging behind the Continent.
The On-Pack Recycling Label scheme aims to deliver a simpler, UK-wide, consistent, recycling message on both retailer private label and brand-owner packaging to help consumers recycle more material, more often.
The key objectives are to:
- help more consumers to recycle more packaging; and
- help Local Authorities and others to increase recycling rates for those materials that could be recycled, but that currently have low collection and recycling rates.
This is a voluntary scheme which ensures that the proposal does not conflict with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive and its aims.
The scheme seeks to address the following challenges:
- Keep it simple for customers;
- Be practical in its application to already space-constrained packs;
- Provide clear advice to customers on how they can recycle in their local area within a widely varying provision of recycling facilities across the UK;
- Ensure those Local Authorities that currently collect materials that are not widely recycled are not disincentivised from continuing to collect these materials where they wish to;
- Ensure that established recycling streams are not contaminated with packaging materials that are not currently recycled; and
- Encourage the development of materials that cannot currently be recycled towards greater recyclability or other suitable means of recovery.
