BRC Letter To Landlords

The British Retail Consortium is calling on the property industry to end the historic practice of quarterly rents. Paying rent quarterly and in advance costs tenants millions of pounds every year and puts enormous pressure on cash flow – particularly for smaller businesses. The campaign is supported by 80,000 small businesses, 14 trade associations, a string of major chains, and 51 MPs.

This campaign is now calling on both private sector and public sector landlords to accept rent one month in advance instead of three.

The BRC has now launched the Flexible Landlord Standard. This Standard recognises the efforts of landlords to support local business by accepting advance monthly rent payments from your tenants. We have been greatly encouraged by the positive response from many local authorities. To date 50 councils have written to us to confirm their support for this fairer alternative to the quarterly regime. Each of these councils now accepts advance monthly payments from their tenants and we are further encouraged to learn that for some councils this has become standard business practice.
