<title>BRC/SPRINGBOARD FOOTFALL AND VACANCIES MONITOR APRIL 2013: SHOP VACANCIES REACH A NEW HIGH</title>
<description>Footfall in April was 1.0% higher than a year ago, an improvement on the 5.2% fall in March. This is the strongest performance since December 2011 when footfall increased 5.7%. The warmer weather in April had a noticeable impact on the figures with footfall improving as temperatures rose. High streets reported the greatest rise (3.4%), the strongest performance since December 2011, followed by out-of-town (0.3%). Footfall in shopping centres fell 3.0% in April, its worst performance since January 2013. The national town centre vacancy rate in the UK was 11.9% in April 2013, up from 10.9% in January 2013, the highest rate since the survey began in July 2011.</description>

<description>Retail employment rose by 1.8% in the first quarter of 2013 compared with a year earlier, driven entirely by part-time workers and predominantly in food retailers. In the first quarter of 2013, the number of outlets rose by 1.4%, having fallen in the previous quarter. In March, there were 253 more stores in our sample compared with March last year, driven entirely by food retailers. Four in five retailers intend to increase or keep staffing levels unchanged in the next three months. </description>

In the first quarter, search volumes on tablet devices outpaced those on any other device, increasing 198% compared with growth on smartphone devices of 66%.
