Scottish Retailing - Key Facts

Retail employs 255,000 Scots – 14% of the total private sector workforce

Retail is one of the country’s most dynamic industries, along with wholesale it accounted for 15% of all new businesses formed in Scotland in 2013

9.4% of enterprises in Scotland (14,070 VAT-registered businesses) are retailers, higher than the UK average of 8.8%

Scottish retail sales were £28bn in 2012: over 1/3 of consumer spending is via shops and online retail

Retail alone accounts for 20% of turnover and 15% of Gross Value Added in the whole Scottish services sector (above the comparable UK figures of 15% and 11%)

Scotland has 23,550 retail outlets, 11.9% of all business outlets (again above the UK figure of 11.0%)

99% of retail businesses in Scotland employ fewer than 50 people

Retailers and wholesalers in Scotland spend £10 million each year on research and innovation

Glasgow is the UK’s 2nd biggest shopping destination, with £2.55bn spent per year
